GUM RECESSION

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue surrounding the teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing the tooth root. This condition can lead to tooth sensitivity, an unsightly appearance, and potential oral health issues. At Dr. Shwetha’s Clinic, we offer specialized gum recession treatment to address this concern and restore the health and aesthetics of your gums

Causes of Gum Recession

Periodontal Disease: Gum recession is often associated with periodontal disease, a bacterial infection that damages the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.

Aggressive Brushing: Brushing too hard or using a toothbrush with hard bristles can contribute to gum recession by wearing away the gum tissue.

Genetics: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to gum recession, making them more susceptible to the condition.

Poor Oral Hygiene: Inadequate oral hygiene practices can lead to the buildup of plaque and tartar, increasing the risk of gum recession.

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism): Habitual teeth grinding or clenching can put excessive pressure on the gums, leading to their recession.

Our Gum Recession Treatments

Gum Grafting: Gum grafting is a common procedure used to treat gum recession. During the procedure, our skilled periodontists take gum tissue from another area of your mouth or use a donor tissue to cover the exposed tooth roots. This helps restore the gumline and protect the tooth structure.

Laser Gum Therapy: Our advanced laser gum therapy offers a minimally invasive and precise alternative to traditional gum surgery. The laser promotes the regeneration of gum tissue and encourages the attachment of gums to the teeth, leading to faster healing and reduced discomfort.

Gum Contouring: In cases where gum recession is accompanied by excessive gum tissue, gum contouring can help reshape and balance the gumline for a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing smile.

Periodontal Maintenance: After undergoing gum recession treatment, we provide regular periodontal maintenance visits to monitor your gum health and prevent further issues.

GUMMY SMILE

Correcting Gummy Smile at Dr. Shwetha's Clinic

A gummy smile is a condition where a significant portion of the gums is visible when a person smiles, overshadowing the teeth and affecting their overall smile aesthetics. At Dr. Shwetha’s Clinic, we offer specialized treatments to correct gummy smiles, restoring balance to your smile and boosting your confidence.

What Causes of Gummy Smile:

Excessive Gum Tissue: Some individuals naturally have a higher gum-to-tooth ratio, leading to a gummy smile.

Hyperactive Upper Lip: In some cases, the muscles in the upper lip can be hyperactive, causing the lip to elevate too much when smiling.

Teeth Eruption: During tooth eruption, if the teeth do not come through the gums properly, it can result in an uneven gumline and gummy smile.

Jaw Development: An abnormal growth pattern of the jaw can also contribute to a gummy smile.

Treatment

The treatment of a gummy smile depends on the cause. In cases of incomplete eruption of teeth, or failure of gingival margin migration, the periodontist can perform a surgical procedure to place the gingival margin in its ideal position, make the teeth as long as their ideal size, and have the gingival margins appear harmonious and symmetrical.

Sometimes a dual approach is indicated, your dentist and the periodontist can work together on establishing an ideal smile using periodontal surgery along with veneers. Ask Dr. Shwetha about your options.

PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

Comprehensive Periodontal Treatment at Dr. Shwetha's Clinic

Periodontitis is an infectious disease that affects the teeth and their supporting tissues. Periodontal diseases are the most common diseases that affect humans. It is caused by a complex bacterial invasion of gingival tissues, resulting in loss of bone around teeth, gingival recession, and eventual tooth loss.

Periodontitis accounts for 70% of tooth loss in adults. Clinical presentations include gum recession, deep pockets, and bone loss on radiographs.

A pocket refers to a gap between the gums and teeth. This gap is the result of periodontitis and acts as a safe place for bacteria since it is impossible to clean with conventional cleaning methods. The pocket is often ulcerated on the tooth side, this results in bleeding gums and acts as a path for the bacteria to invade the tissues.

At Dr. Shwetha’s Clinic, we offer effective and personalized periodontal treatment to combat gum disease and restore the health of your gums.

FAQs

Unfortunately, periodontitis is usually painless causing a delay in seeking help. Bleeding gums and gum recession are usually the earliest signs noticed by patients. Loose teeth are clinical signs of advanced periodontitis. Luckily, general dentists, as well as other specialists, are well trained in identifying periodontitis. Your dentist will evaluate your periodontal condition and refer you to a specialist if further treatment is indicated.

Research shows that people who develop periodontal disease and don’t receive treatment are at far greater risk of losing their teeth than people who do receive treatment.
Not only does periodontitis affect oral health, but there is also undisputed evidence that periodontal disease is a risk indicator of cardiovascular disease. People who have periodontitis are more likely to suffer from strokes and other cardiovascular diseases. The mechanism of this relationship is complex and not quite understood yet. Some of the theories describe a heightened inflammatory condition in the whole body due to bacterial insults in the periodontal tissues.

Over the last century, dentists and periodontists have developed multiple treatment modalities to treat and control periodontitis. Non-surgical therapy consists of scaling and root planning (deep cleaning). This removes most of the local factors that cause the disease, including bacterial plaque and plaque infected calculus. Surgical therapy, however, remains the treatment of choice for advanced periodontitis. Different surgical techniques are applied by the periodontist. The aim for surgical intervention is to either re-establish lost tissues (Regenerative periodontal treatment) or to stabilize the dental condition (Resective periodontal treatment) allowing for proper hygiene and maintaining teeth. Ask Dr. Shwetha about which treatment is best for you.

CROWN LENGTHENING

Enhance Your Smile with Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a dental procedure that involves reshaping the gum and bone tissue to expose more of the tooth’s surface. This treatment is commonly used to address various dental issues and improve the appearance of the teeth and smile. At Dr. Shwetha’s Clinic, we offer crown lengthening procedures performed by skilled dental specialists to help you achieve a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing smile.

When is Crown Lengthening Recommended?

Excessive Gum Tissue: If you have a “gummy smile” where a significant portion of your teeth is hidden by the gum tissue, crown lengthening can reveal more of your natural tooth structure and create a more proportional smile.

Dental Restorations: Crown lengthening is often performed before placing dental crowns or bridges. It allows the dentist to gain better access to the tooth structure, ensuring a secure and long-lasting restoration.

Fractured Teeth: In cases where a tooth is broken or has extensive decay below the gumline, crown lengthening can expose more of the tooth, allowing for proper restoration.

Uneven Gumline: Crown lengthening can create a more even and symmetrical gumline, enhancing the overall aesthetics of your smile.
